The Ultimate Guide to Packing Dishes: 8 Expert Steps for a Damage-Free Move

Packing your kitchen is often the most tedious part of a Sydney relocation. Dishes are heavy, fragile, and uniquely shaped, making them prone to cracking under pressure. If you're moving house or putting your items into long-term storage, you need a system that prioritises structural integrity.
At D-Express Removals Sydney, we’ve moved everything from everyday IKEA sets to high-end Wedgwood china. Here is our upgraded, 8-step professional method to ensure your dishes arrive at your new home in one piece.
### Step 1: Secure Heavy-Duty "Double-Wall" Boxes
Don't reach for thin, used grocery store boxes. Dishes are incredibly heavy when stacked.
The Standard: Use Double-Corrugated (Double-Wall) boxes. These are designed to withstand the vertical pressure of other boxes stacked on top without buckling.
D-Express Tip: Small to medium-sized boxes are best for dishes. A large box full of plates becomes dangerously heavy and is more likely to be dropped.
### Step 2: Assemble Your Professional Packing Kit
To pack like a pro, you need the right tools. Skip the newspaper (the ink stains!) and gather:
Butcher’s Paper: Clean, ink-free, and great for padding.
Premium Bubble Wrap: For your most prized or fragile porcelain.
Heavy-Duty Packing Tape & Dispenser: To reinforce box seams.
Thick Marker Pen: For high-visibility labelling.
### Step 3: Reinforce the Foundation (The "X" Tape Method)
The bottom of the box is the weakest point.
Action: Tape the bottom seam, then add two more strips in an "X" pattern and one across each side edge.
The Cushion: Crumple several sheets of packing paper into "shredded" balls and line the bottom of the box with a 10cm thick layer. This acts as a shock absorber against Sydney’s road bumps.
### Step 4: The Individual Wrap (No Short-Cuts!)
Never stack bare plates on top of each other.
The Process: Place a stack of paper on a flat table. Put a plate in the centre. Fold each corner of the top sheet over the plate until it's fully encased.
For High-Value Items: Add a layer of bubble wrap over the paper and secure it with a small piece of tape.
### Step 5: The "Vertical Edge" Loading Strategy (CRITICAL)
This is the secret most DIY movers miss: Never lay plates flat.
The Logic: Plates are much stronger on their edges than on their flat surfaces.
Action: Place your wrapped plates into the box sideways (vertically), like they are in a dishwasher rack. This allows the plates to vibrate together without the weight of the entire stack crushing the bottom one.
### Step 6: Bundle for Extra Strength
Once you have 4 or 5 plates standing vertically, wrap the entire "bundle" together with another sheet of paper or shrink wrap. This prevents individual plates from shifting and creates a solid unit that is much harder to break.
### Step 7: Zero-Gap Top Padding
Once the box is full, there should be no "jiggle" room.
The Fill: Use more crumpled paper, or even kitchen towels and tea towels, to fill every square inch of empty space at the top.
The Test: Close the flaps and gently shake the box. If you hear anything moving, add more padding!
### Step 8: High-Visibility Labelling & Handling
Seal the box with multiple layers of tape.
Labelling: Write "FRAGILE - KITCHEN DISHES" on at least three sides.
Orientation: Use arrows to mark "THIS WAY UP".
Briefing: Ensure your D-Express removalists know which boxes contain the glassware and dishes so they can be placed at the very top of the load.
