The Green Thumb Guide: Moving Outdoor Furniture, Plants, and Pots

Moving in Sydney often means transitioning between beautiful outdoor spaces. However, outdoor items are notorious for carrying dirt, spiders, and moisture into a clean moving truck. To protect your belongings and your new home, follow our professional 8-step outdoor relocation strategy.
### Step 1: The Deep Clean & Dry (48 Hours Out)
Outdoor furniture lives in the wind and rain. Before it touches our clean moving blankets, it needs a thorough scrub.
The Process: Hose down wicker, plastic, and metal frames to remove dust, cobwebs, and—most importantly—Sydney’s local spiders.
Dry Time: Ensure everything is 100% dry before moving day. Packing wet outdoor furniture can lead to mould and can damage other items in the truck through humidity.
### Step 2: Strip the Decor
Remove all cushions, umbrellas, and decorative lighting.
Cushions: Pack these in large, clear plastic bags. They are bulky but light, making them perfect "gap-fillers" in the truck.
Umbrellas: Close them tightly and wrap them in shrink wrap to prevent them from popping open during transit.
### Step 3: Strategic Dismantling
Outdoor tables are often too wide for standard garden gates or side-access paths.
Tables: Always remove the legs. This prevents the "racking" stress that can snap bolts during the drive.
Glass Tops: If your outdoor table has a glass insert, this must be removed, wrapped in heavy-duty bubble wrap, and moved vertically. Never move a glass-top table with the glass still in the frame.
### Step 4: The "Small Parts" Security Protocol
Outdoor furniture often uses specific, weather-treated screws that are hard to replace.
Action: Place all screws and bolts into a resealable bag and tape it securely to the underside of the main furniture piece. * D-Express Tip: Use cable ties to bundle table legs or chair frames together. This prevents them from clattering against each other and scratching the powder-coated finish.
### Step 5: Preparing Your Plants (The Green Move)
Plants are living things and require special care.
Hydration: Water your plants 2 days before the move. You want the soil moist but not soaking wet, as heavy, dripping pots are difficult to move and can crack under their own water weight.
Pruning: Give your larger bushes a light trim so they don't snag on doorways or truck walls.
### Step 6: Handling Heavy Pots & Ceramics
Sydney is famous for its beautiful (and heavy!) ceramic and terracotta pots.
Fragility: Terracotta is brittle. We wrap these in moving blankets to prevent "clinking" which leads to hairline fractures.
Weight: For oversized pots, we use our Hydraulic Tail Lift. Keeping the pot level prevents the soil from shifting and putting uneven pressure on the ceramic walls.
### Step 7: BBQ & Outdoor Kitchen Prep
Gas Bottles: IMPORTANT. For safety reasons, most removalists (including us) cannot transport gas bottles unless they are professionally purged and certified. We recommend transporting these safely in your own vehicle or swapping them at a local station.
Degrease: Ensure the drip tray is emptied and cleaned. Grease spills in a moving truck are extremely difficult to clean.
### Step 8: The Professional Load
Outdoor items are often the last to be loaded or used to fill the "upper" gaps in a truck once the heavy indoor furniture is secured.
Protection: Even though it’s "outdoor" furniture, we still use high-grade moving blankets. Metal frames can easily scratch the wooden surfaces of your indoor furniture if not properly padded.
